Our History:

Founded in 1968, by the Greenwich Fellowship of Clergy, we have functioned since that time
as a non-profit, interfaith ministry for area nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  We
work with the facilities and local resources to provide for the spiritual care and
development of residents, their families and the staff.
Our Mission:

To provide pastoral and spiritual care to the residents of nursing homes and assisted living
facilities in the town of Greenwich, as well as to the residents’ families and the staff of the
facilities.
Our Services:

GCS works to provide and coordinate Catholic masses, Protestant worship services and
Jewish Shabbat services, other holiday and memorial services at the various homes.
Scheduling clergy requires both time and ongoing work to promote our efforts to encourage
clergy’s ongoing volunteer participation in leadership.  We coordinate Bible Studies,
purchase worship materials and Scriptures for the facilities.  GCS pays for the help provided
by Chaplain Interns (CPE students) to add to our staff in providing spiritual care to the
residents.

Our chaplain, lay chaplain and chaplain interns offer comfort, care, listening ears, a caring
presence as well as prayers, Scripture, even anointing when asked for or appropriate to a
given meeting.  Each of our staff is sensitive to honoring wherever a resident, staff or family
member is coming from whether they are with a faith tradition or no faith.  We are there to
provide support, reassurance and compassion.  We connect various residents of similar
interests and work alongside staff to aid in the well-being and community life of each home.
As our chaplain Heather put it, "our role at GCS is to address the issues of later life and to
assist the residents and their families in their continued engagement with life.  There are
many losses and changes in this stage of life when seniors have to give up some of their
independence and adjust to a new environment.  The aim of GCS is be with residents on their
journey and help them meet the challenges with grace."

Greenwich Chaplaincy Services
Our mission at GCS draws inspiration from the words of Mother Teresa, “ Do no great
things, only small things with great love”.  We minister to over 600 residents, 500 staff
members and families of the residents.   We are not affiliated with any religious
organization, church, synagogue  or nursing home.  We rely solely on the generosity of these
organizations, service clubs and private donors.
